What do you get when you cross “The Breakfast Club” with an episode of “The Walking Dead?” You get THIS IS NOT A TEST by Courtney Summers. I picked this book up because I read some excellent reviews and wanted to see if I agreed with the consensus. Let’s just say, I couldn’t put it down.
The story follows Sloane who lives in a violent home with her abusive father. She only survives his beatings through the love and support of her only sister, Lily, who takes off one day leaving her behind. Now Sloane is the lone target for her father’s anger. As a result, she decides to end her life, that is until a zombie crashes into her home and attacks her father.
Days later, she winds up at her high school with several classmates. While they all don’t fit into the classic “Breakfast Club” mold, they each have issues.
What is truly fascinating about THIS IS NOT A TEST is that while all the other characters are grasping for ways to survive, Sloane is desperate to die, even throwing herself out into the open to be attacked. When this happens it brings the story to a whole new level as one of the male characters realizes she truly wants to commit suicide.
The zombies, while ratcheting up the tension at times, are really just a trope to move the plot along and add tension. The real story is whether or not Sloane will choose life or death. A decision that will leave you frantically turning the pages until the satisfying end.
RATING: WORTH THE CHASE
